The West Bengal government is set to table the Uniform Civil Code bill in the assembly. This follows the implementation of the code in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam. The introduction of the bill fulfills a pre-poll promise to implement the law within six months of coming to power.
The assembly's budget session has been extended by a day to facilitate the introduction and consideration of the bill. A one-hour discussion is scheduled, and the government expects to pass the bill today, citing sufficient numbers. Additionally, two factions of the Trinamool Congress are expected to participate in the debate, although their unified stance remains to be seen.
