West Bengal UCC Bill: BJP Pushes 'One Nation, One Law'
The West Bengal Assembly is set to witness a major legislative face-off today as the state government prepares to table the Uniform Civil Code bill
The West Bengal Assembly is set to witness a major legislative face-off today as the state government prepares to table the Uniform Civil Code bill. If passed, West Bengal will become the fourth state to implement the civil law framework, joining Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam. The proposed legislation seeks to introduce a complete ban on polygamy, establish a uniform legal marriage age across all communities, make the registration of live-in relationships compulsory, and guarantee equal property inheritance rights for men and women, while keeping Scheduled Tribes exempt.
However, the bill faces strong opposition. Lawmakers and groups from minority communities argue that it infringes upon Article twenty-five, threatening India's diversity and overriding traditional personal laws. Concurrently, the fractured opposition party, divided into two rival factions, is preparing separate strategies to counter the legislation. The debate is expected to highlight both the strong opposition to the uniform reform push and the internal power struggles within the opposition ranks.
