A massive political row has erupted over the alleged Ram Mandir donation scam in Ayodhya, where employees managing daily offerings reportedly siphoned off lakhs of rupees. An ongoing Special Investigation Team probe has led to the arrest of eight individuals and the recovery of nearly 80 lakh rupees in cash. Following the scandal, Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned on moral grounds. India Today accessed exclusive CCTV footage showing the police taking accused Avinash Shukla into custody and recovering a cash-filled bag.
Sources indicate a two-day delay in filing the formal complaint after the trust became aware of the theft on June 5. As police continue to raid the residences of the accused, the opposition is demanding a Supreme Court-monitored probe and the dissolution of the trust. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has promised strict action against the guilty while accusing the opposition of politicising the sensitive issue ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
