(Picture Credit: IG/lucastrejo_lt) In a tragic turn of events, Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo lost his wife and two children during the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week. Trejo, 38, had been searching for his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, after losing contact with them when the apartment building where they were reportedly staying in Playa Grande, La Guaira, collapsed during the twin earthquakes that hit the country on Wednesday (June 24). As per reports, the defender was in Caracas preparing for a league game with Deportivo La Guaira when the earthquakes struck.
In the hours after the disaster, he had appealed for help on social media. “Our building in Playa Grande collapsed. I don’t know anything about my family. Please pray for them and share this message in case someone saw them. I want to believe they weren’t there," he wrote on Instagram before the tragic discovery. Authorities had launched a search operation in the Playa Grande area. Rescue workers and volunteers were looking for the missing family including fellow footballer Edson Tortolero who later confirmed the heartbreaking news. “We would like to inform everyone in Venezuela and Argentina that the bodies of Lucas Trejo’s family members have been found," Tortolero wrote on his Instagram account. According to various media reports, rescue teams recovered the bodies of Trejo’s wife and children after a 74-hour search that ended late Saturday.
Argentine media also reported that Trejo’s father and brother travelled to Venezuela to assist in the search. Just hours before the news, Trejo had shared a photograph of himself with his wife and children on social media as hope remained they might still be alive. Deportivo La Guaira, the Venezuelan club Trejo joined earlier this year, had initially announced that his family was missing after the earthquakes. Following confirmation of their deaths, the club paid tribute in a statement. “We join Lucas Trejo in mourning the tragic passing of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and his children, Aaron and Ainhoa Trejo. Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones," the club said. Marítimo de La Guaira, another club associated with Trejo, also expressed its condolences. The twin earthquakes have caused widespread destruction across Caracas and the La Guaira region.
