A family of four were killed in a fatal car crash on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway after the driver of their car allegedly reversed on the highway upon missing a cut, only to be hit by a speeding Scorpio SUV from behind. CCTV footage of the accident, which took place near Halgoya Cut of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, has now surfaced and is rapidly going viral on social media. The CCTV video shows the family's car crossing the Halgoya Cut and continuing on the highway before reversing in an apparent attempt to return to the missed exit. According to the information available, the driver had overshot the cut and was reversing towards it from the under-construction stretch of the highway when a speeding Scorpio SUV crashed into the vehicle from behind. The impact was so severe that the car was dragged several metres and was completely mangled, while the Scorpio lost control and overturned. The entire sequence was captured by highway surveillance cameras.
The crash killed four members of the family on the spot. The deceased were identified as Praveen (40), his wife Preeti (37), his elderly mother Sudesh and nine-year-old Shivansh. Three other members of the family sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Trauma Centre at the district hospital for treatment. The collision triggered panic at the scene as passers-by and other motorists rushed to rescue the injured from the wreckage and informed the police. The impact was so powerful that the front and rear portions of both vehicles were extensively damaged. After receiving information about the accident, police and district administration officials reached the spot.
District Magistrate Arvind Kumar Chauhan and Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinandan visited the district hospital, met the injured and directed officials to ensure proper treatment. Police had earlier sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation into the accident. The CCTV footage has now been made an important part of the probe. Police said they are examining all aspects of the crash and analysing the video to determine the exact cause of the accident. Ends
