(AFP file photo) US President Donald Trump on Monday said any agreement with Iran will either be a “great and meaningful" deal or there will be no deal at all, as ongoing negotiations to formally end the war drag on. In a post on Truth Social, Trump insisted that the potential agreement has not yet even been finalised but warned it would only go ahead if it met his terms.
“The deal with Iran will either be a great and meaningful one, or there will be no deal," he wrote. Trump also used the post to attack critics in the US political establishment, including Democrats and members of his own Republican Party, accusing them of misrepresenting the status of talks. He said many of those reacting to reports of possible concessions “know nothing" about the discussions and were unfairly attacking what he described as a developing process. “I laugh at all of the Dumocrats, RINOS, and Fools who know nothing about the potential deal I am making with Iran, things that haven’t even been negotiated yet," he wrote, adding that such critics were “losers" who create “division and loss".
Trump argued that his approach would be “the exact opposite" of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was negotiated under former US President Barack Obama. He repeated his long-standing claim that the JCPOA was flawed and gave Iran a “direct and open path" to developing a nuclear weapon. Trump withdrew the United States from the deal in 2018, calling it “rotten" and arguing it failed to permanently restrict Iran’s nuclear activities. “It will be the exact opposite of the JCPOA disaster negotiated by the failed Obama Administration, which was a direct and open path to a Nuclear Weapon for Iran. No, I don’t do deals like that!" he added.
