'She Has Nothing to Prove': Venus Williams Opens Up On Serena's Wimbledon Comeback Published By, Last Updated: June 28, 2026, 13:19 IST A decade after their last Wimbledon doubles title, Venus and Serena Williams are back together at SW19. And if you ask Venus, the reunion is every bit as special as it sounds. Rapid Read Serena and Venus, the Williams sisters (X) Venus and Serena Williams have spent more than two decades rewriting tennis history together, and next week, the sisters will add one more chapter at Wimbledon. Ten years after lifting their sixth Wimbledon doubles crown, the iconic duo will reunite at the All England Club after receiving a wild card into the women’s doubles draw. They’ll face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the opening round, with fans set to witness one of tennis’ most beloved pairings back on Centre Court. For Venus, the occasion is about far more than nostalgia.
“It’s very special indeed. We have had quite a history here and it’s nice to be back in 2026, so ready to go," she told reporters on Saturday. One More Dance at SW19 The reunion comes under very different circumstances than the Williams sisters have grown accustomed to. At 46, Venus now competes only sporadically on the WTA Tour, carefully picking her appearances as she enters the twilight of a remarkable career. Serena, meanwhile, has stunned the tennis world by returning from retirement after four years away from the sport. When Serena stepped away following the 2022 US Open, declaring she was “evolving away" from tennis, few believed she’d return to competitive action. But the 44-year-old has done exactly that, motivated in part by a desire to play in front of her two young daughters. Her comeback has already included doubles appearances at Queen’s Club and the Berlin Open, and Wimbledon will also mark her return to Grand Slam singles for the first time since that emotional farewell in New York.
For Venus, agreeing to reunite was the easiest decision imaginable. “I’m excited we’re playing together and I can’t wait until we hit the courts," she said. “As soon as she wanted to play doubles and we were playing doubles, that’s how it works." Nothing Left To Prove Questions inevitably remain over how Serena will fare after such a lengthy absence, especially in singles, where she’ll begin her campaign against Australia’s Maya Joint as she chases a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title and her first major since the 2017 Australian Open. Venus, however, isn’t interested in entertaining any doubts. “Can you walk over to the courts and watch her play? That’s probably your best bet," she said when asked about Serena’s level. “There is no doubt that she has nothing to prove, at all."
