Parents of Twisha Sharma (Credits: ANI) The Supreme Court on Monday asked the family members of Twisha Sharma to get their statements recorded before the investigating agencies instead of saying things before media. The remark was made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant while hearing the suo motu case related to the matter. During the hearing, the chief justice said the family should place its version before investigators so that the ongoing probe is not affected.
“We would like to impress upon family of victim that instead of making statements in public or before media, they should get their versions recorded before the investigating agency so that no prejudice or adverse impact is caused to the ongoing investigation," the observed. The court also appealed to the media to avoid recording or broadcasting statements of potential witnesses connected to the case. “We request media to avoid recording statements of potential witnesses," the bench said. During the proceedings, the Solicitor General informed the court that the only issue pending regarding the recommendation for a CBI probe was obtaining consent. The law officer assured the bench that the matter would immediately be taken up with authorities so that the CBI could formally take over the investigation.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice expressed concern over the “narrative" surrounding the case, especially claims suggesting that the judiciary or local authorities were preventing a fair investigation because the deceased woman’s mother in law, Giribala Singh, is a former district judge and her husband is a practising lawyer. “We are against the narrative that is being created. That is why the CBI should take it over. We believe the state police and judiciary," the observed during the proceedings. The bench further remarked, “Whatever unfortunate incident has taken place, it should be ensured that a fair, impartial investigation takes place." The court observed that the Madhya Pradesh government had already recommended a CBI investigation and said the only issue before the bench at present was the formal transfer of the probe.
While passing the order, the bench noted that Twisha Sharma had died an “unfortunate unnatural death".
