Twisha Sharma Death Case: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over the public narrative and media coverage over the death case of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma at her matrimonial home in Bhopal, urging journalists and media outlets not to record statements made by family members or potential witnesses while the investigation remains underway. While hearing the suo motu matter, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi, cautioned all stakeholders against sensationalising the case through public commentary and media appearances. Let the things move as per law and procedure," the bench observed during the hearing. The top court said that it was “slightly at pain" over certain developments in the matter and emphasised that statements by relatives and potential witnesses should be recorded before the investigating agency rather than shared publicly. “We would like to impress upon the family of the victim that instead of making statements in public or before the media, they should get their versions recorded before the investigating agency so that no prejudice or adverse impact is caused to the ongoing investigation," the Chief Justice said. At one stage, counsel appearing for Twisha Sharma’s family told the court that the family was not attempting to sensationalise the matter. “We are not here to sensationalise the matter," the lawyer submitted.
The Supreme Court, however, reiterated that all parties – including the victim’s family, accused persons and potential witnesses – should cooperate with investigators and refrain from making public statements that could influence the probe. The bench also underscored the need for a “fair, independent and impartial" investigation into the death case and noted that the CBI would immediately take over the probe after the Madhya Pradesh Government recommended a transfer of the case. “The only issue as of now for our consideration is the recommendations made by the state of MP to hand over the investigation to CBI," the court observed, while recording Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s assurance that the matter would be immediately taken up with the concerned authorities. What’s The Case? The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter on May 23 following widespread media reports and allegations of procedural irregularities in the investigation into Twisha Sharma’s death. Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Katara Hills on May 12.
Her family has alleged dowry harassment, delay in FIR registration, inconsistencies in the post-mortem examination and possible tampering with evidence. Meanwhile, her husband Samarth Singh, the prime accused in the case, has been sent to seven days of police remand by a Bhopal district court. The state government has also sought cancellation of interim bail granted to his mother Giribala Singh, a retired judge.
