While the Centre fixes the base price of fuel uniformly across the country, retail prices differ sharply from state to state because of Value Added Tax (VAT) and local levies imposed by individual state governments. An analysis of current fuel prices shows that several Opposition ruled states continue to record the highest petrol and diesel rates in the country, mainly due to higher VAT structures. According to the latest data, Telangana currently has the highest petrol price at Rs 118.3 per litre, followed by Kerala at Rs 114.9 and Karnataka at Rs 110.3. Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand also feature among states with higher retail fuel prices.

Notably, four of the five states with the highest fuel prices are ruled by Opposition parties or INDIA bloc allies. At the same time, several BJP ruled states continue to have comparatively lower petrol and diesel prices despite the latest revision.
