Kolkata Police personnel on Friday reached the residence of senior Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee at Harish Mukherjee Road, triggering speculation over the reason for the visit. The police presence comes just days after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) issued a notice to Banerjee’s residence and several other properties allegedly linked to him and his family members, seeking sanctioned building plans and related documents for scrutiny.
Officials have not yet clarified why police arrived at the premises, and there was no immediate statement from either Kolkata Police or Banerjee’s office. It remains unclear whether Friday’s visit is connected to the ongoing property verification process. The notices sparked political controversy because the KMC itself is run by the Trinamool Congress, raising questions over why scrutiny was initiated against one of the party’s top leaders shortly after the BJP assumed power in West Bengal. According to reports, notices were issued concerning 17 to 21 properties allegedly connected to Banerjee, his relatives and associated entities. These reportedly included premises at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road, an adjacent building on Kalighat Road, and properties located on Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.
Civic authorities sought approved building plans, construction records and explanations regarding possible additions or modifications, including installations such as lifts or escalators. The scrutiny was reportedly initiated under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which empowers authorities to examine alleged unauthorised construction and seek clarifications from property owners. The issue had also reached TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who reportedly sought explanations from Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim and members of the Mayor-in-Council regarding how the notices were issued. Hakim publicly distanced himself from the controversy, saying elected representatives formulate policy while executive decisions relating to building approvals and enforcement fall under the municipal administration. Meanwhile, BJP leaders claimed properties linked to TMC leaders were being examined for alleged irregularities and asserted that “no one is above the law." Whether Friday’s police visit relates to the KMC notices or another matter remains unclear.
