Rain Approaching Northwest India, Relief From Heatwaves Likely After May 29: IMD Reported By, Last Updated: May 25, 2026, 18:37 IST A fresh western disturbance is approaching Northwest India around May 28, which will reduce day temperatures by at least 6-8 degrees, abating the heatwaves Rapid Read Extreme heat has taken a toll across India this summer again. Most parts of India can expect some relief from the ongoing heatwaves after May 29, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday, highlighting that a fresh western disturbance is likely to hit the region around May 28. The IMD said the weather system is likely to bring the much-needed rain showers over the region which has mostly been dry over the last two weeks. It is likely to reduce daytime temperatures by 6-8°C during May 29-31 across most parts of the country, except for Rajasthan. This will also ease the heatwaves in many regions.
This could lead to a gradual fall in daytime temperatures which may settle around 35-37℃ after it passes. However, until then, the IMD warned that large parts of the country will continue to face scorching temperatures and heatwaves, at least for another five days. Extreme heat has taken a toll across India this summer again, with temperatures soaring past 45℃, and settling at least 3-5 degrees above normal. The maximum temperatures peaked at Bhrampuri in Maharashtra at 47.2℃ on Sunday, while the nighttime temperature was lowest at 23.4℃ in Rohtak. For the next 4-5 days, Northwest India including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Vidarbha in Maharashtra will continue to reel under searing heatwaves, with maximum temperatures at least 4.5℃ above-normal. Most of these areas including Delhi are experiencing warm nights, aggravating the heat stress. Delhi recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.6℃ on Sunday, while the nighttime temperatures were above 30℃ over most parts of the city – nearly 4-5℃ above-normal.
The heat is also taking a toll on the electricity demand. On May 21, India touched the new all-time high power demand of 270.82 GW, after a persistent rise in temperatures all through the week. Meanwhile, heat and humidity levels are also rising in the coastal states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Konkan-Goa as the southwest monsoon prepares to arrive. The IMD has predicted heavy rains over Northeast India during the next week, as well as Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the next 2-3 days. If the MeT’s forecast augurs well, then the southwest monsoon should also arrive over the Kerala coast by May 26, as predicted earlier. So far, conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest & southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin Area, southwest, southeast & east-central Bay of Bengal and remaining parts of Andaman Sea during the next 2-3 days.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture along and off Kerala coasts, Lakshadweep, Comorin areas during May 25-28 and over Comorin area from May 28-30 May in the wake of the upcoming monsoon rains.
