A Palm Beach office presented as a scientific research foundation allegedly allowed convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to spend much of his 18-month prison sentence outside jail, according to a new investigation that raises fresh questions about the extraordinary privileges he received while incarcerated. The office, operated under the name Florida Science Foundation, was described as a workplace dedicated to supporting scientific research. However, an investigation by The Telegraph, based on more than 1,000 documents, concluded that the organisation functioned largely as a private office where Epstein maintained his lifestyle, influential contacts and, according to multiple women, continued sexually abusing victims. Prison Sentence With Daily Work Release Epstein began serving an 18-month sentence in June 2008 after pleading guilty in Florida to charges of soliciting prostitution and soliciting a minor. Instead of remaining in custody full-time, he was approved for a work-release programme that allowed him to leave the Palm Beach County jail each day and spend several hours at the Florida Science Foundation office before returning to prison at night.
His lawyers argued that the foundation supported scientific research and that Epstein needed to oversee its activities. However, records later showed the organisation had been registered only months before he entered prison, despite claims that it had existed for around 15 years. Luxury Office, Little Science The foundation operated from a 3,881-square-foot office in a Palm Beach high-rise overlooking a lake. Documents reviewed during the investigation showed the office was fitted with luxury furnishings, entertainment systems, expensive décor and a large kitchen. Epstein reportedly received personal items there, including an iPod, a desktop computer, books, DVDs and luxury materials for renovations at his private island. Investigators found little evidence that meaningful scientific research was ever conducted from the premises. During its existence, the foundation reportedly made only a single documented contribution to a science-related programme before it was dissolved in 2010. Allegations Of Continued Abuse Several women later alleged that Epstein used the office to continue sexually abusing young women while serving his sentence. One woman told investigators she worked at the office after being lured to the United States with promises of a modelling career. She later testified before Congress that Epstein assaulted her there during his work-release period.
