J. Gowthami, a Grade-II constable of the Tamil Nadu police, has qualified for the women’s 800m in the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Nagoya, Japan. She clocked a 2:04.17-minute run to secure gold in the women’s 800m at the 65th inter-State senior athletics championship in Bhubaneswar on Thursday (June 25, 2026).
“The qualifying time for the women’s 800m at the Asian Games is 2:05.21. The squad for the Asian Games will be announced by the Athletic Federation of India and I am hopeful of competing in the event in Japan,” Ms. Gowthami told The Hindu over the phone as she was on her return journey to Coimbatore by train.
Born in Hosur in Krishnagiri district, Ms. Gowthami was into athletics from her school days. She went on to win medals at the university and State-level events, before venturing into the inter-State senior athletics championship. She joined the Tamil Nadu police as Grade-II constable in 2023 after completing B.A. English and continued her passion for the tracks even after marriage.
Gowthami is currently serving in the Armed Reserve, Coimbatore City Police. Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan and senior officers lauded her achievement.
