'Fair, Impartial Probe Should Be Ensured': Supreme Court On Twisha Sharma Death Case Published By, Last Updated: May 25, 2026, 11:16 IST The Supreme Court said a “fair, impartial investigation” must be ensured in the Twisha Sharma death case as it expressed concern over allegations of institutional bias. Rapid Read A wedding photo of Twisha Sharma, who died by suicide in Bhopal (Source: Social Media) The Supreme Court on Monday said that “whatever unfortunate incident has taken place, it should be ensured that a fair, impartial investigation is taking place" while hearing the suo motu case related to the death of model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma at her matrimonial home in Bhopal. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi, heard the matter after the apex court registered a suo motu case titled “In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of Young Woman at Matrimonial Home." During the hearing, the court expressed concern over the public narrative being built around the case and urged restraint from all sides, especially the media.
SC ASKS MEDIA TO EXERCISE RESTRAINT Chief Justice Surya Kant said the court was “slightly at pain because of some of the actions" and requested media organisations not to amplify statements from either side of the family while the investigation was underway. “We will request our media friends not to go for the statements of the victim’s family or the other family. Let the things move as per law and procedure," the said during the proceedings. The bench also observed that it was “unfortunate" that allegations were being made suggesting the judiciary was obstructing a fair investigation because the accused’s mother is a former district judge. “The mother-in-law is a former district judge, and it is unfortunate that it is being said the judiciary is derailing the trial," the bench observed. COURT BACKS CBI TAKEOVER The Supreme Court also referred to the decision to hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation and said it was aimed at countering the narrative surrounding the investigation.
“We are against the narrative that is being created. That is why the CBI should take it over. We believe the state police and judiciary," the Chief Justice said. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, informed the court that the matter had already been transferred to the CBI. “Now it has gone to CBI," Mehta told the bench, to which the responded, “Yes, the decision is very fair. That is why the state gave it to the CBI." Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing in the matter, urged that the Department of Personnel and Training notification be issued quickly so that the agency could formally begin the investigation. Justice Bagchi observed that the transfer was now “an administrative exercise between the state and CBI."
