(File photo/PTI) Pakistan Rangers have launched a major crackdown on essential food suppliers operating along the border regions of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), arresting four individuals in Kahuta during a high-stakes confrontation. The detainees were intercepted while attempting to breach heavily fortified military checkpoints to deliver critical food supplies to the blockade-hit territory. The enforcement of this strict food embargo has triggered widespread local resistance and severe condemnation from regional leadership, further escalating tensions during a sensitive period. The high-handed actions by the paramilitary forces have drawn sharp criticism from the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which has been at the forefront of documenting regional grievances.
Condemning the arrests, JAAC leader Khawaja Mehran publicly slammed what he termed the ongoing oppression and brutality being directed at local populations, particularly noting the severity of enforcing a starvation tactic during the holy month of Muharram. The committee praised the residents of Kahuta for actively defying the military-enforced blockade to transport life-saving commodities to vulnerable communities across the line. Escalating Confrontation and Retaliation Threats The developing crisis has pushed local civil society organisations to the brink of open defiance against the military apparatus. Expressing the growing fury among the populace, Mehran issued a direct warning to the establishment, stating that the action committee would actively dismantle the Rangers’ checkpoints if the administrative high-handedness did not cease immediately. The leadership emphasised that the civilian population’s patience has been entirely exhausted by prolonged economic isolation and structural neglect. The enforcement of the blockade has also sparked a larger debate regarding the military’s unchecked authority within the country’s administrative framework.
The JAAC leadership openly questioned the Pakistan military’s extreme deployment of force against unarmed citizens, asking what kind of institutional framework authorises an army to shoot its own people. Mehran accused the armed forces of completely bypassing the constitutional mechanism and operating strictly on its own arbitrary will, without any democratic oversight or legal accountability. A Call for Mobilisation As the situation in Kahuta remains highly volatile, regional leaders have widened their political appeal, urging civil society groups across Pakistan to unite against the overreach of the security apparatus. The Awami Action Committee argued that the ongoing food blockade is not merely a regional issue but a symptom of a systemic disregard for basic human rights and constitutional guarantees by the state. With local intelligence networks indicating that further protests are being organised across neighbouring districts, the military establishment faces a delicate challenge in maintaining order without inciting a larger civil uprising. The outcome of this stand-off will likely have deep implications for the security dynamics and governance model within the strategic border zones, as local residents show no signs of backing down from their efforts to sustain supply lines to PoK.
