The BJP government in West Bengal is expected to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state Assembly next week. The bill is likely to be tabled on Monday during the ongoing budget session. Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP pledged in its manifesto to implement the UCC within six months of coming to power in the state.
If passed, West Bengal would join other states like Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam in establishing a common set of personal laws across all communities. The initiative aims to ensure there is a single legal framework for all citizens in the state, ending what the ruling party describes as politics of appeasement.
