A controversy has erupted over an alleged sacrilege video involving Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. While Mann initially dismissed the viral clip as AI-generated, he later claimed an imposter from Canada used a hyper-realistic face mask to resemble him. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee questioned this defense, asking why a forensic test was needed if a mask was used.
Adding to the issue, an India Today ground probe revealed that a forensic laboratory in Delhi, cited to support the Chief Minister's defense, does not exist. Staff at the location confirmed no forensic analysis was conducted. Haryana Police also alleged the forensic report was stage-managed. Furthermore, the video addressed by Mann differs from the one flagged by the Akal Takht Sahib, which purportedly shows a man sprinkling liquor on photographs of Gurus.
The Punjab government has blamed the BJP for manufacturing the controversy, while the opposition rejects the Chief Minister's claims.
