According to palace officials, the decision was taken after “careful consideration" and is aimed at allowing Buckingham Palace to function primarily as the ceremonial and operational headquarters of the monarchy while significantly expanding public access to the historic building. Although Charles and Camilla will not permanently reside there, they will have access to private rooms inside Buckingham Palace for use during working days and occasional overnight stays if required. What Happens To Buckingham Palace? Buckingham Palace will remain the centre of royal life, hosting state banquets, diplomatic receptions, investitures, garden parties and official ceremonies. Officials described the palace as the monarchy’s “headquarters", saying it would continue to be the King’s principal workplace even if it is no longer his primary home. The project is expected to cost around £369 million and is due to be completed in 2027.
