Why Trump Is Heading Back To The Hotel Where An Assassination Plot Against Him Was Foiled Published By, Last Updated: June 26, 2026, 16:53 IST Donald Trump returns to Washington Hilton to address Faith and Freedom Coalition after April assassination attempt, security tightened, suspect Cole Tomas Allen faces charges. US President Donald Trump (AFP file photo) US President Donald Trump is set to return to the Washington Hilton on Friday for the first time since an alleged assassination attempt at the hotel forced the postponement of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April. Trump will address the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual “Road to Majority" conference at the same venue where an armed man allegedly tried to breach a Secret Service security checkpoint while the president was attending the correspondents’ dinner.
Security Tightened For High-Profile Event Security has been significantly strengthened ahead of Trump’s appearance. A US Secret Service official said the agency had reviewed its security posture following the April incident and continues to adapt to an increasingly challenging threat environment. The Secret Service said its existing security plan during the April event successfully intercepted the threat, but additional measures would be implemented where necessary. Suspect Faces Assassination Charges Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old California resident Cole Tomas Allen, who has pleaded not guilty to charges that he attempted to assassinate the president. Prosecutors allege Allen, armed with a shotgun, attempted to force his way through a security checkpoint, fired at a Secret Service agent and stormed the hotel’s security perimeter before being subdued.
Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and other senior officials were evacuated safely. Historic Venue For Presidential Security The Washington Hilton has long hosted major political events, including the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. It is also the site where former President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981. Following the April incident, Trump questioned whether the hotel provided adequate security, describing it as “not a particularly secure building." The White House Correspondents’ Association later announced that its rescheduled dinner would be held at a different venue in July. Faith And Freedom Gathering The Faith and Freedom Coalition, an influential evangelical organisation, remains one of Trump’s key political support bases. While the president continues to enjoy backing from many evangelical groups, he has also faced criticism from some conservative allies over his Iran ceasefire agreement and abortion-related policies.
