NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte met US President Donald Trump at the White House to calm tensions over the Iran conflict and alliance strains. Rutte used flattery, highlighting the "Trump Trillion" in increased European defense spending since 2017 and praising Trump’s push for fair burden-sharing. However, Trump appeared unconvinced, stressing he wants “loyalty” from NATO allies rather than money. He criticized their reluctance to support the US campaign against Iran and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The meeting comes ahead of a crucial NATO summit in July, with Trump questioning the alliance’s value and reviewing US troop presence in Europe.
