'Country Feels Like Suburb Of Islam': Denmark Plans Nationwide Ban On Loudspeaker Azan Published By, Last Updated: June 26, 2026, 12:29 IST Denmark plans a nationwide ban on loudspeaker Islamic calls to prayer, citing integration and public space concerns. A man calls for the Azan to alert people about a prayer time during the holy month of Ramadan at the Shah-i-Hamdan shrine in Srinagar on April 21, 2021. (AFP/File) Denmark is moving towards a nationwide ban on the public broadcasting of the Islamic call to prayer, with the government citing concerns over integration, public space and what officials describe as growing “Islamisation" concerns. Denmark’s Immigration and Integration Minister Morten Bødskov said the government would resume work on examining the legal framework for restricting loudspeaker-based calls to prayer from mosques.
He said the call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops, arguing that it did not have a place in Denmark. The proposal seeks to introduce a nationwide restriction rather than relying on existing local noise regulations. A decision proposal submitted to the Danish Parliament calls for a ban on “loudspeaker-amplified prayer or calls to prayer in public spaces." The issue has been debated in Denmark amid wider discussions over immigration, religious expression and integration. Supporters of the move argue that public religious broadcasts should be limited, while critics have raised concerns over religious freedom and equal treatment of faith communities. According to Danish parliamentary documents, previous proposals on restricting amplified calls to prayer have also been introduced, including a proposal submitted by members of the Danish People’s Party.
The proposed nationwide ban would replace the current system, under which restrictions are largely handled through local noise regulations. The move comes as Denmark continues to debate policies related to visible religious practices and integration. Previous discussions have included restrictions on religious symbols and practices in certain public settings.
