Police have named eight accused in the FIR, including Tinnu Yadav and Anukalp Mishra, while several other unidentified persons have also been booked. The FIR invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 306, 316(5), 317(4), 317(5), 61 and 3(5). The accused have been booked on charges including criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy. The Uttar Pradesh government initiated the action after the SIT's preliminary investigation reportedly recommended the registration of an FIR. The SIT had been constituted by the state government on June 13 at the request of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust following allegations of misappropriation of donations received at the Ram Temple.
The controversy gained political attention after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, on June 7, referred to reports alleging that crores of rupees from donations offered at the Ram Temple were missing. He urged the courts to take cognisance of the matter. Responding to the allegations at the time, the Trust's General Secretary, Champat Rai, accused the Samajwadi Party and the Congress of attempting to derive political mileage from the controversy ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He said the world was watching and also referred to the Ram Mandir movement, stating that the Samajwadi Party was in power when firing took place during the agitation.
Authorities have launched further investigation based on the findings of the SIT's preliminary report, and attention is now focused on the next course of action. Sources indicated that large-scale arrests could follow as the investigation progresses. Ends
