An under-construction factory shed collapsed in Kolkata, resulting in the deaths of eleven workers, while over twenty individuals sustained injuries. Rescue operations involving disaster response forces and the army continue at the site. The state government announced an ex gratia of ten lakh rupees for the families of the deceased, alongside two lakh rupees from the central government. Authorities have formed a special investigation team and arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.
The tragedy has triggered political sparring, with the ruling state government blaming the former municipal administration for approving a flawed structural plan before the current government took power. In response to the collapse, the state government has mandated an audit of construction projects, temporarily halted ongoing under-construction work, and initiated a strict scrutiny of commercial projects across the city to ensure accountability. Opposition members have demanded a fair and neutral probe into the matter to ensure justice for the victims.
