Dario Amodei no longer talking to White House, now talks on Fable 5 ban going well

Earlier this month, the US government directed Anthropic to block foreigners, including its own employees, from accessing its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. Anthropic, which is led by Dario Amodei, decided to pull off access to the two models from all users. Since then, the AI startup has been holding discussions with the White House on reverting the ban, but with not much progress. But now, a new report claims that the talks may be back on track after Dario Amodei stopped taking part in discussions. Read Full Story As per a report from Wired, Anthropic’s discussions with the Trump White House over the ban on Mythos and Fable have improved since Dario stepped away. Instead, the talks are now being led by Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, and the company’s head of public policy, Sarah Heck.
Dario Amodei reportedly didn’t listen According to the report, the White House had become more comfortable engaging with Anthropic after Brown replaced Amodei in the meetings. One person directly familiar with the calls was quoted as saying, “Tom Brown is not being a weirdo like Dario and can actually engage.” Officials reportedly found Amodei difficult to deal with and said he did not listen to their concerns. Do note that following the ban on Mythos and Fable, US President Donald Trump had raised Amodei and Anthropic for taking quick action over the directive. He told Axios, “He [Dario Amodei] responded to us very quickly because you know it's a tremendous liability.” Trump added, "And he responded very responsibly, I thought." This is not the first time Anthropic has faced tensions with the US government. Earlier this year, the AI startup was labelled a supply chain risk by the Department of Defense after a fallout on unrestricted AI use.
White House yet to lift ban The report adds that the Trump administration and Anthropic have held multiple calls in recent days, including technical discussions, as both sides try to identify what evidence the company would need to provide to address concerns about jailbreaks and restore access to the model. The dispute centres on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 models, which belong to the company’s “Mythos-class” family. Anthropic has said these models are built on the same core technology as Claude Mythos Preview, which it had previously considered too dangerous for public release. Fable 5 was presented as a version with safeguards intended to reduce cybersecurity risks, but concerns emerged soon after launch that those protections could be bypassed. As per reports, Amazon researchers alerted White House officials shortly after Fable 5 was released that jailbreak techniques could remove some of its safeguards.
