A prominent opposition leader has submitted an application to the high court expressing regret over remarks made during a state assembly election rally. The leader had linked the son of a former chief minister, who is now a union minister, to an offshore accounts leak scandal. Following the remarks, a defamation case was filed in a special court.
During the recent high court hearing, the opposition leader's legal counsel admitted that the complainant was named by mistake and sought to quash the legal proceedings. The ruling party has heavily criticised the opposition leader for making unverified allegations during election campaigns and subsequently retracting them. A ruling party spokesperson accused the opposition leader of following a hit-and-run approach to politics and losing credibility.
The court will decide the future course of action based on whether the complainant accepts the apology or chooses to pursue further legal proceedings.
