MEA Passport Row Explodes | BJP Hits Back At Opposition Over Citizenship Proof Controversy
A major political controversy has erupted following the Ministry of External Affairs stating that an Indian passport is a travel document and not conclusive proof
A major political controversy has erupted following the Ministry of External Affairs stating that an Indian passport is a travel document and not conclusive proof of citizenship. Opposition parties launched an attack on the government, alleging that ruling party membership might soon become the only valid proof of citizenship. In response, the ruling party strongly countered the opposition's outrage, clarifying that the external affairs ministry has not announced any new policy.
Representatives highlighted that this is a long-settled legal position supported by the Passport Act of nineteen sixty-seven, which permits the issuance of passports to non-citizens under specific circumstances. The ruling party also referenced a twenty thirteen Bombay High Court ruling stating that a passport alone does not establish citizenship. They maintain that citizenship flows from the Constitution and relevant citizenship laws, calling the opposition's criticism completely unwarranted and legally baseless.
