A Comptroller and Auditor General audit has highlighted significant irregularities in the Karnataka government's flagship Gruha Lakshmi scheme, a seventy-five thousand crore welfare program. The audit findings reveal that over nineteen thousand beneficiaries were linked to common bank accounts, raising concerns about potential duplication. Furthermore, repeated deposits amounting to one point eight crore rupees were credited to over eight thousand nine hundred accounts.
The report also noted that twenty-three thousand beneficiaries received payments despite unavailable account details, with the total dispersal in such cases amounting to forty-six crore rupees. While the Karnataka government admitted to discrepancies, Congress leaders defended the scheme, citing rural banking habits and attacking the opposition over past controversies like electoral bonds. The BJP has labeled the irregularities a large-scale scam, demanding an immediate high-level probe into the matter.
Officials have stated that they are reviewing the beneficiary list to eliminate ineligible recipients and rectify the data entry gaps.
