An audit report has exposed significant lapses in the Karnataka government's Gruha Lakshmi welfare scheme, highlighting severe discrepancies in the distribution of funds. The state audit watchdog flagged issues such as financial transfers being made to the accounts of deceased individuals, duplicate payments, and instances where multiple accounts were linked to the same beneficiaries. Following the revelations, the ruling party leadership acknowledged the flaws, attributing them to outdated data quality and verification issues while promising to revisit the list of beneficiaries to filter out ineligible recipients.
The controversy has ignited a fierce political debate, with the opposition criticising the ruling government for mismanaging welfare schemes and alleging a massive scam. In defence, the ruling party members argued that the audit report highlighted procedural errors, such as beneficiaries opening multiple accounts to avoid loan deductions, rather than outright corruption. The government has directed relevant departments to verify the findings and identify unqualified beneficiaries, though questions remain over the failure to update the recipient database earlier.
