A strong earthquake struck off Venezuela’s northern coast causing buildings to collapse in the capital city of Caracas. The epicentre was located about 28 kilometres northwest of Montalbán, an area home to some of the country’s largest oil refineries. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the main quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.5.
It was preceded by a magnitude 7.2 foreshock that hit the region just 40 seconds earlier. The tremors prompted frightened residents to rush out of buildings with family members and pets before assembling in the streets.
