A catastrophic seismic doublet has struck north-central Venezuela, with a powerful magnitude 7.5 mainshock preceded just 39 seconds earlier by a magnitude 7.2 foreshock on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the shallow earthquakes struck west of the coastal community of Morón in Carabobo state, sending violent tremors throughout the country and neighboring Colombia. The back-to-back quakes collapsed several large buildings in the capital of Caracas, including the upscale neighborhoods of Altamira and Los Palos Grandes, sparking fears of high casualties and widespread structural damage.
Passengers at the Maiquetía international airport fled in panic as ceilings collapsed and debris rained down. The disaster struck on a public holiday celebrating the Battle of Carabobo, leaving many families trapped inside their homes. While a temporary tsunami advisory was triggered for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire, it was later canceled. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello has urged citizens to remain outdoors due to the extreme threat of severe aftershocks as emergency first responders and rescue teams scramble to locate survivors amid the rubble.
