A fatal under-construction warehouse shed collapse in Kolkata's Taratola area has claimed at least five lives and left approximately twenty-five people hospitalized, with two in critical condition. Rescue operations involving the NDRF, SDRF, and the Army are underway, as more individuals are feared trapped under the extensive debris. The property, leased from the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port Trust, was being built for a tea company.
Kolkata Police have formed a Special Investigation Team and detained the godown owner, while officially arresting a structural engineer, a building supervisor, and two labour suppliers. Investigators are currently examining whether substandard construction materials or structural flaws caused the fatal incident. Following the disaster, the West Bengal government ordered a comprehensive audit of all halted and ongoing commercial construction projects across the city.
The disaster has also sparked a political blame game over accountability and the approval process of the sanctioned building plans.
