No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture on the main island of Honshu at a depth of about 50 kilometres. The strongest shaking was recorded in neighbouring Aomori Prefecture, reaching upper 6 on Japan’s seven-level Shindo intensity scale. As a precaution, some Shinkansen bullet train services in north-eastern Japan were temporarily suspended for safety inspections before resuming operations. Authorities said no abnormalities were detected at nuclear facilities, including the Tomari plant in Hokkaido. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi directed government agencies to assess the situation and urged residents in affected regions to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
Officials said damage appeared limited, with residents in some areas reporting only minor incidents such as objects falling from shelves.
