Falta repoll witnessed a voter turnout of over 87 per cent among the constituency’s 2.36 lakh electors. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appeared headed for a massive victory in the repoll to West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency, with party candidate Debangshu Panda maintaining a huge lead over his rivals as counting progressed on Sunday. According to Election Commission data, after 16 of the 21 counting rounds, Panda secured 1,11,270 votes and was leading by 76,397 votes over his nearest rival, CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi, who garnered 34,873 votes.
Reacting to the party’s strong performance, BJP leader Pradip Bhandari celebrated the development and hailed it as a major political message from the people of Bengal. The repoll in all 285 booths of the Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district was conducted on May 21 after the Election Commission countermanded the original polling held on April 29 over allegations of EVM tampering and other irregularities.
The repoll witnessed a voter turnout of over 87 per cent among the constituency’s 2.36 lakh electors. To ensure smooth and peaceful voting, the Election Commission deployed nearly 35 companies of central forces across the constituency. The total electorate in Falta comprises 1,21,300 male voters, 1,15,135 female voters, and nine third-gender electors. The constituency had witnessed heightened tension after complaints emerged during the April 29 polling regarding the alleged use of perfume-like substances and adhesive tapes on EVMs at several booths. Subsequent scrutiny by the Election Commission reportedly revealed alleged attempts to tamper with footage captured by web cameras installed at multiple polling stations. The findings raised concerns over the role of booth-level officers, presiding officers, polling staff, and election observers. Following the inquiry, the Election Commission ordered repolling across all booths in the constituency, making Falta one of the rare Assembly segments in the state to witness a complete repoll.
