The Department of Consumer Affairs amended the Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Rules, 2013, allowing GATCs to verify petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG, LNG and hydrogen dispensers. The move is aimed at improving accuracy in fuel measurement and reducing the burden on state departments. With the latest amendment, the number of categories handled by GATCs has increased from 18 to 23. The government said the decision comes at a time when the use of cleaner fuels such as CNG, LNG and hydrogen is rising across the country. “The move is expected to enhance the availability of verification services, improve efficiency and support the growing adoption of cleaner fuels across the country," the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said in its release.
The inclusion comes as India’s energy mix shifts. “The inclusion of CNG, LNG and Hydrogen dispensers under the GATC framework comes at a time when the use of cleaner fuels is increasing across the country," the department said. The consumer affairs ministry said the measure will improve availability of verification services, ensure accurate fuel delivery and increase transparency in fuel transactions.
