With Los Angeles set to stage the 2028 Games and Brisbane already confirmed for 2032, the 2036 edition remains the next available Summer Olympics.

The IOC has approved the inclusion of a Strategic Dialogue phase, which will become a key part of the selection process beginning in March 2027. Explaining the rationale behind the changes, Grabar-Kitarovic said, “These reforms will give potential hosts greater clarity, and their governments will have a clear timetable to provide the requested support." The former Croatian President further emphasised the demand for a more open system, stating, “Potential hosts wanted greater clarity. All stakeholders wanted greater transparency," while adding that the goal is to finalise the host city by the middle of 2029. Under the revised model, interested parties will first be shortlisted for the Strategic Dialogue phase in 2027. During this stage, prospective hosts must complete the Future Host Questionnaire and provide core financial guarantees before progressing to the next round. Candidate cities will also need to demonstrate cost-control measures and establish clear timelines for infrastructure and project delivery.

Will India Host Olympics In 2036? India, which submitted its Letter of Intent to host the Games in 2024, is currently engaged in the IOC’s Continuous Dialogue phase. Ahmedabad remains the proposed host city for the country’s ambitious bid. The next stage, known as Targeted Dialogue, will begin in 2028 for shortlisted candidates. Outlining the final steps, Grabar-Kitarovic stated, “Preferred host will have to update their submission. They will also have to submit full set of guarantees. The final decision on the host for the 2036 Games will be taken at the session in mid 2029." According to the IOC, the reformed process is intended to make bidding more cost-efficient while giving governments greater planning certainty and sufficient time to build public support for their projects.
