When R Madhavan received the Padma Shri at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 23, it wasn't just the medal that caught attention. Peeking out from beneath his navy blue sleeves was an extraordinary timepiece that blended Indian heritage, artistry and horological craftsmanship into one striking accessory. Dressed in a sophisticated navy blue bandhgala with matching trousers, Madhavan kept his look elegant. And while the ceremony was undoubtedly his moment, for the watch enthusiasts, another detail stood out. On his wrist was the rare Titan Nebula Jalsa Flying Tourbillon, a limited-edition watch with only 10 pieces in existence. It is priced around Rs 40.5 lakhs. R Madhavan's watch that tells a story At its centre is a miniature hand-painted depiction of Jaipur's iconic Hawa Mahal, created by renowned miniature artist and Padma Shri awardee S. Shakir Ali. The intricate artwork transforms the watch dial into something that feels more like a wearable piece of art. The watch is set in an 18K rose gold case, accented with red agate—a gemstone that mirrors the red sandstone architecture of Jaipur—and powered by an in-house flying tourbillon movement developed by Titan. Crafted from 144 components and featuring 14 jewels, it represents years of expertise packed into a remarkably small space. The dial itself captures the idea of a "jalsa", or celebration. It depicts a royal procession before the Hawa Mahal, serving as a tribute to victory, dignity and splendour. The timepiece pays homage to the more than 200-year legacy of the monument and the spirit of celebration it represents. The painting on the watch is a depiction of celebration (Photo: Nebula by Titan/Instagram) And that sentiment felt especially relevant as Madhavan received one of India's highest civilian honours. According to the brand, this is "a beautiful reminder that celebration is not just about external festivity - it's about the inner triumphs that define you. The quiet victories that no one sees, but you feel deeply." While the Padma Shri recognised decades of work on screen and beyond, the watch on his wrist seemed to echo the significance of the moment—a celebration not just of success, but of the long journey that led to it.
