Rescue operation is underway. (Photo: X) Kolkata Tragedy: The roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata’s Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon. At least 23 people are feared trapped under the debris. A large-scale rescue operation is underway, and seven people have been pulled out so far. The incident occurred around noon at a warehouse under construction on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge in west Kolkata. According to police, workers were present at the site when the structure’s roof suddenly gave way.

Some people were working there at the time of the incident, and we fear that several individuals may still be trapped under the debris," an official told PTI. Emergency response teams from multiple agencies were rushed to the site following the collapse. Personnel from Kolkata Police, the Disaster Management Group, civil defence, and fire and emergency services have been engaged in the rescue operation. Visuals from the area showed rescuers working through twisted metal and debris as cranes and heavy lifting equipment were deployed to clear the site. Large iron beams from the collapsed structure were being removed to help teams access areas where workers could be trapped.

Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of workers present at the site when the warehouse collapsed, and the exact cause of the incident remains unclear. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the structural failure. Meanwhile, the state government has activated emergency control rooms to assist affected families and coordinate rescue efforts.
