A delegation of elected representatives and advocates, led by Shivamogga MP B.Y. Raghavendra, met Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Wednesday, and appealed for the establishment of a High Court Circuit Bench in Shivamogga. The delegation included MLAs S.N. Channabasappa and Belur Gopala Krishna, MLCs D.S. Arun and Dhananjay Sarji, Shivamogga Bar Association president G.R. Ranghavendra Swamy, and advocate K.P. Sripal, among others. The delegation conveyed to the Chief Minister that Shivamogga would be a suitable location for establishing the Bench to serve the central region of Karnataka.
Such a facility would bring judicial services closer to the people of Shivamogga and neighbouring districts, they argued. Raghavendra urged the Chief Minister to retain Shivamogga district under the jurisdiction of the High Court’s Principal Bench in Bengaluru until a Circuit Bench is established in the city. He opposed the proposal to place Shivamogga under the jurisdiction of the proposed Bench in Mangaluru, stating that such a move would impose an undue burden on litigants, advocates, and the public.
Crop insurance discrepancies Raghavendra also raised critical issues regarding the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme for the 2024–25 season, citing serious disparities in compensation payments to farmers. Unscientific monitoring of telemetric rain gauges has resulted in vastly different compensation amounts being paid to neighbouring villages despite identical weather conditions and similar crop losses. The Deputy Commissioner of Shivamogga had submitted a detailed proposal to rectify these anomalies, but it has remained pending with the government for several months.
Raghavendra appealed to the Chief Minister to expedite action on the proposal, resolve the technical issues affecting compensation assessment, and ensure that affected farmers receive equitable compensation.
