In a move that blends judicial diplomacy with digital innovation, the Supreme Court of India and its Russian counterpart have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening cooperation and sharing technological expertise.
The MoU was signed during a meeting between the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation in Moscow on June 23. Held at the Marble Hall of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the discussions focused on strengthening the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries and enhancing cooperation between their judicial institutions. The two sides exchanged views on emerging challenges facing judiciaries and underscored the importance of closer collaboration to address them. A key area of discussion was the digital transformation of court systems, including the use of technology and artificial intelligence to improve judicial efficiency, strengthen justice delivery mechanisms and enhance access to justice. The delegations also discussed the significance of high-quality judicial education and capacity-building initiatives.
Following extensive deliberations, the two sides signed the MoU, reaffirming their commitment to cooperation through exchange visits, short- and long-term training programmes, as well as joint seminars and conferences. Technology-driven judicial administration emerged as a major area of collaboration, with both sides agreeing to share experiences and best practices in the use of digital tools in the justice system. To advance this objective, a Joint Working Group will be established to develop strategies and mechanisms for sustained technological cooperation and deeper institutional engagement between the two judiciaries. The agreement is being viewed as a significant milestone in India-Russia judicial relations and is expected to pave the way for closer collaboration in building efficient, technology-enabled justice systems.
