A fire at a commercial building in the Aliganj area of Lucknow has claimed the lives of fifteen people, triggering a political controversy and urgent safety inspections across the city. Preliminary findings from the civic body probe reveal severe violations, indicating that the structure was originally approved for residential use but illegally converted into a commercial coaching centre. Eighteen officials and engineers have been found guilty of negligence.
The investigation highlights that a demolition order issued for the building was revoked in 2016. The loss of lives, primarily caused by suffocation, has exposed the lack of proper smoke ventilation, emergency exits, and basic fire safety arrangements within the premises. Following the incident, the fire department has launched extensive inspection drives at various commercial complexes and coaching institutes to assess safety standards.
Meanwhile, a political row has erupted, with the opposition accusing the state government of corruption and administrative failure, while a suspended fire safety officer claims he is being unfairly targeted to shield senior officials.
