A poltical row broke out after the unveiling of the Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, with the BJP accusing the Congress of contradicting its own criticism of US President Donald Trump. The Telangana government on Tuesday ceremonially renamed the road adjoining the US Consulate in Hyderabad’s Financial District as “Donald Trump Avenue". The plaque was unveiled by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka during the Freedom 250 celebrations marking America’s 250th Independence Day. According to the US Consulate General in Hyderabad, the special designation honours the United States and reflects Hyderabad’s growing role in strengthening US-India ties.
However, the move quickly drew criticism from the BJP, which pointed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s past remarks against Trump and the India-US trade deal. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla questioned why a Congress-ruled state would honour Trump when Rahul Gandhi had repeatedly criticised the US President and accused him of acting against Indian interests. “Rahul Ki Hypocrisy Pro Max. Rahul Gandhi says President TRUMP hurting Indian Interests. Then why is his government in Telangana giving the ultimate tribute to him by renaming a road after him?" Poonawalla said in a post on X. “So Revanth Reddy basically doesn’t take Rahul Baba seriously? He did the same when Rahul was chanting Adani Adani… He went and did an MoU with Adani group," Poonawalla said. The BJP’s attack comes against the backdrop of Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Centre over its trade negotiations with the United States. Gandhi had alleged that the Narendra Modi government compromised India’s interests in its dealings with the Trump administration and urged the US to engage with India as an equal partner. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Gor thanked the Telangana government for naming the road after Trump, describing it as a reflection of the strong partnership championed by the US President. “I am deeply grateful to the Telangana government for naming the road as Donald Trump Avenue, a gesture that reflects the kind of strong, respectful partnership President Trump has championed for America," he said. Gor also highlighted Hyderabad’s growing importance in the US-India relationship, particularly in sectors such as aerospace, defence and technology. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka congratulated the American people on the occasion of their 250th Independence Day and said Telangana remained a key partner in strengthening bilateral ties.
