Israel-Lebanon talks: Families demand answers over detainees held by Israel
The fate of Lebanese detainees held by Israel has emerged as a key issue in negotiations aimed at securing a permanent end to the conflict
The fate of Lebanese detainees held by Israel has emerged as a key issue in negotiations aimed at securing a permanent end to the conflict between Lebanon and Israel. Rights groups say at least 37 Lebanese have been detained by Israeli forces since the 2024 war, many during incursions into Lebanese territory and after the November 2024 ceasefire.
Families say they have received no information about their relatives, while rights advocates accuse Israel of denying detainees due process and preventing contact with lawyers or relatives. The International Committee of the Red Cross has also been denied access to those held, according to campaigners.
Among the missing is 18-year-old Jawad Alameh, who disappeared in southern Lebanon on June 15. His mother says she has received no information about his whereabouts despite appeals to Lebanese authorities, the army and the United Nations. Lebanon is now pressing for the release of detainees as part of broader talks with Israel.
