The Calcutta High Court has rescheduled Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's petition to be allowed to travel abroad for medical reasons to Monday. The matter was mentioned before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya earlier in the day, but he refused to hear it and instead asked for the application to be mentioned next week. Banerjee had approached the court, seeking relaxation of a condition placed earlier in connection with a case wherein he cannot leave the country without the court's approval.
He urged the court for modification of the condition to be able to travel overseas for treatment on his eye owing to an injury. Read Full Story Banerjee, who has been at the centre of cases against TMC leaders and crackdown on the party since the BJP's sweep in Bengal polls, faces a complaint that was lodged on May 15. A resident of Baguihati in north Kolkata had submitted several video clips to the police, alleging that certain remarks made by the TMC MP during public speeches were provocative in nature.
The court had taken cognisance of the claims and sought further examination of the matter. The TMC leader had suffered injuries to his eye in October 2016 in a road accident while returning to Kolkata from a party event in Murshidabad. He underwent treatment at multiple hospitals in India before opting for specialised surgery and medical care abroad. In the case, the court on May 22 granted Banerjee protection from arrest till July 31 or until further orders.
However, the bench mandated overseas travel only with prior permission and directed the TMC MP to inform his probe officer about the same at least 48 hours before. Ends
