Days later, a shocking truth was unearthed: He was pushed into a 400-foot gorge by his fiancée, Siya Goyal and her boyfriend, Chetan Chaudhary, resulting in his death. The tragedy that unfolded at the Lohagad Fort near Lonavala in Maharashtra has brought the historic monument into the spotlight, with focus on its long-standing reputation as one of the most mysterious sites in the state.
While the incident itself has no links to supernatural elements, renewed focus is on the unexplained tales and ghost stories that have deepened the Lohagad Fort’s mystery over the years. Delving Into History Nestled in the Sahyadri ranges, Lohagad –– which translates to ‘Iron Fort’ –– is located near Lonavala in Pune. Popular as an iconic trekking destination, the fort has a history dating back to 2,000 years. While the earliest foundations were set up during the Satavahana period, historians say that the hill was fortified during the medieval period. Later, the site was expanded and strengthened by successive rulers, according to an NDTV Lifestyle report. The Lohagad Fort gained dominance during the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder and one of the most renowned rulers of the Maratha kingdom. The fort emerged as a key aspect of the reign’s defensive network, after it was captured and strengthened under Shivaji’s rule.
According to historical records, the site also functioned as a treasury and administrative centre. With the decline of the Maratha powers, the fort eventually came to be controlled by the British, according to NDTV Lifestyle. Supernatural Stories, Unexplained Sightings Beyond the rich culture and picturesque views of the Lohagad Fort lies uncountable stories of ghost sightings and paranormal experiences that have surrounded the venue. While some claim to have spotted unusual figures walking along the fort walls, many others speak of mysterious figures appearing briefly before vanishing into thin air. Pertinent to note that there is no document evidence to support these claims. How To Reach Lohagad Fort? Since the Lohagad Fort is located in the Mawal region of Maharashtra –– roughly 11 km from Lonavala and 60 km from Pune –– the easiest way to reach the monument is via Malavli Railway Station. Once you arrive at the Malavli Railway Station, you can book a shared auto-rickshaw or a local SUV that will take you directly to the base village, Lohagadwadi.
