Police said he picked up another passenger and acted normally until his arrest hours later. The incident took place early Monday near Chattarpur Metro station, where the girl was sleeping on a pavement with her parents, daily-wage labourers.

Police said that around 4.15 am, the accused, Bashu Kumar Singh, parked his white hatchback nearby and allegedly took the child while she was asleep. A PCR call was made to Mehrauli police station at 4.58 am, after which a search began. Singh was caught around 11 am in Vikaspuri, west Delhi, after briefly stopping there. Police said he had just dropped a passenger. “He appeared to be behaving normally, showing no indication of what he had done," a source said. Investigators added Singh, a Bihar native with a family there, had allegedly consumed marijuana before the crime. Multiple versions during questioning Police said Singh had been parked near the pavement before the abduction. During interrogation, he gave different versions. In one, he said he assaulted the child in his car near Fatehpur Beri. In another, he claimed he drove to a forested stretch along the Faridabad-Gurugram road, where he allegedly raped her, strangled her with cloth, and hit her chest with a stone.

Body hidden under stones Police said he led them to the spot around 5 pm. The body had been covered with stones. “It was an attempt to delay discovery and destroy evidence," the source said. The body was sent for post-mortem. He also claimed he first planned to return the child but fled after seeing police; this is being checked. FSL teams examined the car and the site. Samples were collected. A case has been registered under Section 6 of the POCSO Act and for rape, kidnapping and murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said no other involvement has been found and a chargesheet will be filed.
