Hearing the yelling daughter, the girl’s father ran after the car, but by then the accused had already fled with the child. The girl was raped and strangled to death by the cab driver. The child was sleeping alongside her parents and three siblings near Chattarpur in Mehrauli during the early hours of Monday when a cab driver allegedly picked her up and forced her into his vehicle.
Her screams jolted her father awake. “I heard my daughter shouting ‘Papa’. By the time I got up, she was being taken inside a car," the grieving father recalled as quoted by Times of India. Armed with only a stick, he ran after the speeding white hatchback, but the vehicle disappeared within moments. The frantic father immediately alerted the Police Control Room (PCR), triggering a massive four-hour-long search operation. Investigators scanned footage from nearly 200 CCTV cameras and utilised technical surveillance to map out the vehicle’s escape route. How Was The Driver Arrested? While the registration plate wasn’t clearly visible initially, the footage showed that the vehicle had been loitering at the spot since 4:00 AM. The police requested trip details for that specific area from ride-hailing apps. Using GPS and the accused’s mobile location, the police traced the car to the Vikaspuri area in West Delhi. Singh was arrested in West Delhi within six hours of the crime. Police have alleged that after abducting the child, Singh took her to an isolated area near the Delhi-Haryana border, where she was raped and later killed.
Investigators said the accused allegedly attempted to conceal the body beneath stones in a forested stretch near the Faridabad-Gurugram road. During questioning, he allegedly gave multiple versions of events, and investigators were continuing to verify various aspects of his statements. Forensic teams have collected biological and material evidence from the accused’s vehicle as well as the crime scene. Additionally, on Tuesday, when the police were taking the accused to the crime scene, he attempted to escape from police custody. He was shot in the leg during a police encounter. Singh was being made to recreate the sequence of events linked to the crime when he allegedly tried to flee. During the process, he reportedly snatched the service pistol of a police officer, triggering a scuffle. “In the scuffle that followed, the accused tried to flee. Police fired at him in self-defence and to prevent his escape, hitting him in the leg," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. According to the police, the accused, who already has five cases of assault and fighting registered against him in Bihar, was arrested within four hours.
