(Reuters File) U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired back at the Senate after it backed legislation to halt any further military action against Iran without congressional approval, claiming Tehran was already in a weakened position and ready to make major adjustments. The U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted 50-48 in favour of a war powers resolution, aimed at limiting any further military action in Iran without congressional approval. In a post on ‘X’, Trump wrote: “So, I have Iran on the ‘ropes,’ ready to go down for the fall, willing to give us practically anything, and for the first time in decades, respecting the hell out of the United States and its President, ME".
The President lashed out at Republican senators who joined Democrats in supporting the legislation, describing them as “Republican Losers". He claimed the move had only complicated his administration’s efforts to deal with Iran. “These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!" Trump said. Mounting Concerns Over Rising Energy Costs The legislation had already been greenlit by the House of Representatives, reflecting growing disagreement among lawmakers about Trump-administered military action in Iran, especially against the backdrop of surging fuel prices in the country post the blockade of the key Strait of Hormuz. The vote also highlighted division among Trump’s own party, with several Republicans joining Democrats in backing the legislation to halt the war with Iran, which started on February 28.
After the U.S. and Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran, Tehran retaliated by launching attacks across the Gulf and subsequently blocking the crucial Strait of Hormuz, which saw global economies plunging into a complete state of chaos. A Reuters poll has revealed that only one in four Americans reckon that President Trump’s war with Iran was “worth its costs", while a majority fear that a peace truce is unlikely to last. Washington and Tehran are engaged in intense negotiations, having initiated a 60-day window for talks as part of a ceasefire that was announced last week. The talks focus on the toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, achieving an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, and a framework to allow the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran.
