A photo of the Delhi Police (PTI) The cab driver accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in south Delhi was shot in the leg by police on Tuesday after he allegedly attempted to escape while recreating the crime scene and snatched a policeman’s service weapon. The incident took place on Mandi Road near Fatehpur Beri, where Delhi Police had arrested the accused, Bashu Kumar Singh (29), as part of the ongoing investigation into the chilling crime that has shocked the national capital. According to the police, Singh was being made to recreate the sequence of events linked to the crime when he allegedly tried to flee. During the process, he reportedly snatched the service pistol of a police officer, triggering a scuffle.
“In the scuffle that followed, the accused tried to flee. Police fired at him in self-defence and to prevent his escape, hitting him in the leg," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The accused was immediately overpowered and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police said his condition was stable. Authorities also initiated legal proceedings against him for the alleged escape attempt. The development comes a day after Singh was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the minor girl, who was allegedly abducted while sleeping beside her family on a pavement near Chattarpur Metro station in Mehrauli. According to investigators, the girl was sleeping with her parents, who work as daily-wage labourers, when she was allegedly taken away by the accused in the early hours of Monday. Her father reportedly noticed a vehicle speeding away and realised his daughter was missing, following which a PCR call was made to the police. A massive search operation was launched, with police analysing footage from nearly 200 CCTV cameras and relying on technical surveillance to track the suspect.
Singh was arrested in West Delhi within six hours of the crime. Police have alleged that after abducting the child, Singh took her to an isolated area near the Delhi-Haryana border, where she was raped and later killed. Investigators said the accused allegedly attempted to conceal the body beneath stones in a forested stretch near the Faridabad-Gurugram road. Officials said Singh later led police teams to the location where the girl’s body was recovered. During questioning, he allegedly gave multiple versions of events, and investigators were continuing to verify various aspects of his statements. Forensic teams have collected biological and material evidence from the accused’s vehicle as well as the crime scene. The post-mortem examination and forensic findings are expected to play a key role in establishing the sequence of events. Police said no evidence suggesting the involvement of any other person has emerged so far. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
