The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has launched a sharp attack on the Tamil Nadu government, alleging that the Assembly violated established procedures
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has launched a sharp attack on the Tamil Nadu government, alleging that the Assembly violated established procedures by passing a resolution on the Mekedatu project without proper debate, calling it a “hastily inserted” and “negligently handled” move that undermines legislative norms. In a strongly worded statement, the party said that the House ‘holds a unique dignity’, and warned that recent proceedings have failed to uphold its traditions. It alleged that the resolution on the contentious Mekedatu issue was passed without due deliberation, describing it as a breach of procedural rules. Read Full Story MEKEDATU ISSUE AT THE CENTRE OF DISPUTE The Mekedatu project refers to Karnataka’s proposed dam and reservoir plan across the Cauvery River, a long-standing inter-state dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the project, arguing that it could impact downstream water availability and affect irrigation for farmers. The AIADMK claimed that any fresh move or institutional proposal related to the issue risks diluting earlier legal victories secured in the Cauvery dispute, including tribunal awards and subsequent Supreme Court-backed mechanisms governing river water sharing. REFERENCE TO PAST COVENANT ON CAUVERY RIGHTS The party also referred to earlier milestones in the Cauvery dispute, stating that the final tribunal award was gazetted during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, while the Cauvery Management Authority was later established during the AIADMK government led by Edappadi K.
Palaniswami. It argued that these developments came after years of legal struggle and warned against any parallel framework that could weaken Tamil Nadu’s established rights over Cauvery waters. SHARP EXCHANGE OVER ASSEMBLY CONDUCT Beyond the Mekedatu resolution, the AIADMK accused the ruling party of allowing deteriorating standards in legislative conduct. It alleged that recent speeches by both the opposition and the Chief Minister reflected a breakdown in decorum and accountability. The statement also raised broader governance concerns, questioning the government’s response to issues such as law and order, power outages, and reported industrial incidents. It claimed that adequate answers were not provided during Assembly discussions. BROADER POLITICAL CHARGES AGAINST GOVERNMENT Escalating its criticism, the AIADMK accused the Chief Minister of avoiding direct engagement on key issues and relying heavily on rehearsed responses, while also questioning the handling of opposition interventions in the House.
